2 KILLED, 5 INJURED IN TOO-TALL TRUCK CRASH

Two people were killed and five were injured Friday after a flatbed truck hauling an empty holding tank slammed into an overpass on Interstate 95 south of Petersburg, authorities said.

The tank toppled off the truck and struck a taxi cab, state police Sgt. D.R. Legg said. A tractor-trailer ran into the tank, which in turn hit a car, he said.

Tony Polink and his wife, Goldie, both in their 70s, were killed when the tank hit their car, Legg said. The Polinks were from Uniontown, Pa., he said.

A woman who was inside the taxi cab was injured when the tank sheared off the cab's roof, police said. The woman was in critical condition at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond, a hospital spokesman said.

The drivers of both trucks and the taxi cab and another passenger in the cab were also injured, Legg said.

The tank was too tall to go under the bridge, state police spokeswoman Mary Evans said. "He was on the wrong route, and it was over height," she said. - Associated Press
