AMTRAK DERAILMENT SUSPECT PLEADS GUILTY

A man charged in the switch tampering derailment of an Amtrak train carrying 123 passengers pleaded guilty Friday.

Raymond Gary Bornman Jr., 19, of Baltimore will be sentenced Aug. 24 at U.S. District Court in Newport News.

U.S. District Judge Robert Doumar accepted Bornman's plea to charges of unlawfully and intentionally derailing an Amtrak train.

Bornman could get a maximum 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mike Smythers said he would seek a stiff sentence because of the number of injuries in the derailment Aug. 12.

More than 70 people were hurt when Amtrak's southbound Colonial jumped the tracks where a switch had been opened, sending the 79 mph train onto a siding designed for a maximum speed of 15 mph.

Bornman, a Coast Guardsman, was arrested last month at New York's La Guardia Airport while preparing to board a plane for an assignment to England. - Associated Press
