In other men's 45 matches Friday involving area players: Richard Lee of Roanoke beat Butch Moon of Earlysville 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the first round before dropping a quarterfinal to Brad Karen of Charlottesville 6-0, 6-0; Jim DeNoon of Richmond ousted Mark Merritt of Roanoke 6-3, 6-0 in the first round; Karen defeated John Lipscomb of Roanoke 6-3, 7-6 (7-4); Bill Patterson of Richmond beat Wayne Nester of Christiansburg 6-0, 6-3; and Ted Sawyer of Richmond defeated Lu Merritt Jr. of Blacksburg 6-0, 6-1.
In the men's 35 division, Nelson Prillaman of Collinsville had a bye through the first round, then fell to Bill Moldoch of Annapolis, Md., 7-6 (10-8), 6-2 in a quarterfinal.
