William Hagy had been twirling a gun under a picnic shelter at the Vinton Pool near the Vinton Jaycees park, Vinton Police Lt. William Brown said.
The magazine of the .25-caliber automatic had been taken out, but one round was left in the chamber.
Hagy apparently put the gun to his head, pulled the trigger, and it went off. At least five friends, all under the age of 18, witnessed the accident, Brown said. No charges had been filed, and police still were trying to determine if the gun belonged to Hagy.
