As a therapist, I'm impressed by the loneliness and isolation I see in most men, both in and out of my office. The societal and family pressures on men to act tough and keep their painful feelings inside lead to very destructive compulsive behaviors, such as drug and alcohol abuse, overworking, sexual affairs and aggressive, controlling behaviors. The taboo against asking for help leads many men to self-destructive consequences.
However, I do see some light at the end of the tunnel. More men are challenging the stereotypical masculine roles as they are exposed to alternatives. I see a trend toward redefining masculinity into a healthier, better-connected, more flexible lifestyle. The support of the media in presenting these new concepts will be a service that will benefit men and the women who care about them. RONALD F. SALZBACH ROANOKE
