SALEM TOPPLES KEYS 4-1

Marty Neff went 2-for-4 with a double and a solo home run to power the Salem Bucs to a 4-1 victory over the Frederick Keys in Carolina League baseball Saturday night at Grove Stadium.

Gary Wilson picked up the victory for Salem (28-35) with relief help from Jason Christiansen and Jeff McCurry. Wilson worked 6 1/3 innings, giving up one run on seven hits. The right-hander struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Christiansen fanned two and gave up one hit in 1 2/3 innings, and McCurry finished with an inning of perfect relief.

Catcher Marcus Hanel also went 2-for-4 with an RBI and stole a base for the Bucs, who dropped Friday's opening game of the series 3-2 in 10 innings.

Salem, leading 1-0, took advantage of an error by Keys shortstop Feliciano Mercedes to score two unearned runs off Mark Smith in the top of the seventh inning.

After Frederick (32-31) scored its run off Wilson in the bottom of the seventh, the Bucs added an insurance run off reliever Lee Cusey in the eighth.

Catcher Cesar Devarez went 2-for-4 and drove in the Keys' only run with a double, and designated hitter Roy Hodge was 2-for-3.

Salem will send Dave Dorneweerd to the mound today against Frederick's Jimmy Haynes in the final game of the series. \
