FOUR-RUN 11TH INNING LIFTS BUCS OUT OF FOURTH

After letting a one-run lead slip away in the eighth inning, the Salem Buccaneers scored four times in the 11th to defeat the Frederick Keys 8-4 on Sunday afternoon in Carolina League baseball at Harry Grove Stadium.

Mike Brown went 2-for-6 and drove in three runs as Salem (29-35) moved a half-game ahead of Winston-Salem and out of the first-half cellar in the Southern Division.

Eric Parkinson picked up the victory with two innings of scoreless relief, although he did hit a batter.

Dave Doorneweerd worked the first seven innings for the Bucs, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks.

After Kevin Rychel walked the leadoff batter in the eighth, manager Scott Little called Sean Evans out of the bullpen. Evans erased Rychel's runner, but he was tagged for a run in the inning.

Bo Ortiz provided most of the offense for Frederick (32-32). The left fielder went 3-for-5 with a double and a solo homer.

The Bucs return to Salem Municipal Field today for the opener of a three-game series with Durham (32-31). Game time is 7 p.m.
