Moore mentioned "disturbing problems" facing Roanoke now, as compared to 11 years ago. He mentioned the lack of high-tech businesses and the commercial decline of the downtown area. However, he failed to mention the environmental side of the issue.
Roanoke has taken many positive steps toward saving the environment. For example, one can recycle paper, plastic, aluminum and cans at Cycle Systems. The development of this successful project places us two steps ahead of some neighbors.
Moore emphasized that a four-year high-tech college would be the answer to our problems. Education is the answer, but a college will not end these "disturbing problems." The answer is educating our children and teen-agers. And within the past 11 years, Roanoke has moved forward in this direction. There is evidence in the development of the Roanoke Valley Governor's School for Science and Technology, CITY School, Magnet School and the Center for Advanced Studies in the Humanities.
Roanoke, give yourself a pat on the back. You've come a long way, and you're going still further. MARIANA L. ABRAHAM ROANOKE
