PAIR'S $13 MILLION RICHER

A Henry County couple claimed a $13 million jackpot in the Virginia Lottery on Monday.

Wanda Slaughter, a sales associate at Sears Roebuck & Co. in Martinsville, and her husband, Thomas, a sergeant with the Martinsville Police Department, said they are not planning to quit their jobs.

The Slaughters will receive about $445,000 a year after taxes for 20 years, lottery spokeswoman Paula Otto said.

Wanda Slaughter said she bought the winning ticket for Saturday's drawing at the Speedway Center convenience store on Commonwealth Boulevard in Martinsville. She used an astrology book to pick the winning numbers of 7, 8, 9, 16, 25, 36.

"Those were the numbers the book had for last week," she said. "I got busy and didn't have time to change them, so I just played the same numbers again. I'm really glad I didn't change them."

Wanda Slaughter said she bought the tickets Saturday night but fell asleep before the drawing. "We checked the [Sunday] morning paper and started screaming," she said.

Thomas Slaughter said the entire family will cash in on the winnings. Their immediate purchasing plans include a new car for their 18-year-old son, T.J.; a horse for their 14-year-old daughter, Andrea; and a trip to Disney World for Wanda Slaughter.

What's up for Sgt. Slaughter?

"He has always wanted a truck with air conditioning," his wife said.

Lottery spokeswoman Cherie Phaup said 172 players matched five of six numbers to win $978 each. Another 7,904 players matched four numbers to win $45 each.
