The Virginia Automobile Dealers Association reported 741 new cars registered in the Roanoke Valley last month. It was the best month since August 1990, when 748 new cars were registered to owners living in the Roanoke Valley.
Last month's sales were an increase of 53.7 percent over the 482 cars sold in the valley a year earlier. It also compared with 584 in April for a month-to-month increase of 26.9 percent.
The May activity was enough to push year-to-date registrations ahead of those for last year.
For the first five months of this year, 2,715 cars were registered, 7.5 percent ahead of the 2,526 recorded in the 1992 period. Of those cars registered for the first time in the valley, 603 were domestic models and 138 were foreign-made.
And 387 of them were registered in Roanoke, 229 in Roanoke County and 125 in Salem.
Also added to the Roanoke Valley Economic Indicators this week are new statistics on electricity sales, coal loadings and check clearings.
