FREIGHTLINER TOPS HEAVY-TRUCK SALES

Freightliner Corp. held its lead in the heavy-truck industry in May as its sales climbed 32.8 percent from a year ago. All major manufacturers scored double-digit gains.

Sales of 2,790 heavy trucks last month by Portland, Ore.-based Freightliner pushed year-to-date deliveries to 14,041 units, up 40.5 percent from a year earlier. But Freightliner's market share fell to 23.5 percent from 24.1 percent at the end of April as competitors' sales also rose sharply.

Industry sales of 12,989 units were up 35.3 percent, making it the strongest May since 1989 in the heavy category.

Volvo GM Heavy Truck Corp. of Greensboro, N.C., recorded May sales of 1,775 units, a 47.3 percent gain from a year before, while year-to-date deliveries were 7,061 trucks, 24.8 percent ahead of year-earlier rates, giving the company an 11.8 percent market share.

Paccar Inc. of Bellevue, Wash., moved into second place, based on sales of its two divisions, Kenworth Truck Co. of Kirkland, Wash., and Peterbilt Motors Co. of Newark, Calif. Combined sales rose 42.6 percent to 2,785 units.

Navistar International Transportation Corp. of Chicago posted May sales of 2,309 heavy trucks, up 19.8 percent.

At Mack Trucks Inc. of Allentown, Pa., sales soared 63.1 percent to 1,713 trucks.

Ford Motor Co. sales hit 1,468 heavy trucks, up 16.2 percent. - Journal of Commerce
