REPUBLICAN SWORN IN AS NEW TEXAS SENATOR

Kay Bailey Hutchison was sworn in Monday as the first female U.S. senator from Texas, as buoyant Republican leaders proclaimed her victory proof that the GOP is poised to make gains nationwide.

"This is the most exciting day of my life, bar none," the 49-year-old said at a luncheon in her honor, attended by more than 530 supporters flown in from Dallas on three chartered jets.
