The consortium, created by the General Assembly last year, is a partnership of 11 Southwest Virginia school divisions, businesses and higher education institutions.
Marcia Quesenberry, its director, has been working with companies like IBM for the past year seeking donations to benefit participating schools.
IBM officials told Quesenberry that they had 200 obsolete personal computers in a Manassas warehouse and would donate them to the consortium.
"I was thrilled," Quesenberry said, but the problem remained of how to get them to Southwest Virginia.
Overnite Transportation Co. waived trucking fees and agreed to donate transportation costs to aid the consortium.
Students learning to be computer technicians will repair the computers, which then will be divided among the 11 school divisions.
