OBIT REID, KATHLEEN HEYWARD SMILEY
REID, Kathleen Heyward Smiley, of Roanoke, died Sunday, June 13, 1993, at
her home. She was a 10 year resident of Roanoke. She was preceded in death in
1991 by her husband, Dr. Frederick K. Reid. Mrs. Reid was born in
Philadelphia, the daughter of Andrew Robeno Smiley and Kathleen Hamilton Ryan
Smiley. She was educated in Pennsylvania and New York graduating from the
Castle School. She worked in the retail and publishing fields and later went
into training at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in New York City where she
met her future husband. The Reids were married in January, 1941. During World
War II, the Reids were stationed at the United States Military Academy at West
Point, after the War they moved to Rome, N.Y. Mrs. Reid was active in the
Episcopal Church and in numerous charitable and civic organizations her entire
life. In 1983 the Reids moved to Roanoke where they became Parishioners of St.
Johns Episcopal Church. She was a devoted member of the Altar Guild and
assisted in the creation of the St. Johns needle point memorials for the
churches centennial in 1992. She is survived by her children, William Bradley
Reid II of Key West, Fla., Kathleen Philler Reid of New York City and Andrew
Hamilton Reid of Nashville, Tenn. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that
memorials be made to the Good Samaritan Hospice, 4235 Colonial Ave. S.W.,
Roanoke, Va. 24018. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday,
June 16, 1993, at St. Johns Episcopal Church. Interment will be in Rome, N.Y.
