Damon Williams is the new boys' basketball coach at Rockbridge County, taking over for veteran Dan Lyons, who resigned to do an administrative internship in the school system.
Last month, Ramon Williams took a job as an assistant coach at VMI. The twins were star basketball players at VMI after leading William Fleming's program in the mid-1980s. Last year, the two served as part-time assistant coaches at Salem under new Spartan coach Charlie Morgan.
"I just think Damon has a bright future. I like the fact that he spent time with [VMI coach] Joe Cantafio, whom I have a lot of respect for. I'm also happy with the experience he had under Coach Morgan in a double-A program," said Rockbridge County principal John Reynolds. "Everybody I've asked has nothing but the highest praise for Damon as an individual."
Damon Williams had his final interview with Rockbridge County officials Tuesday.
Lyons had a 47-38 record in four seasons as head coach at Lexington High School. He coached Rockbridge County, which was a Group AA school merging Lexington, Natural Bridge and Rockbridge high schools, to an 8-14 record last year.
The Wildcats were a young team without height and struggled in the Blue Ridge District. Next year, however, Rockbridge County returns its top four scorers, including double-figure scorers Marty Early (15.6 ppg) and Kenny Lewis (14 ppg). The Wildcats won't have any experienced players with height returning.
