The four-day Extension Consumer Horticulture program will feature seminars on topics from effective irrigation methods and erosion control to identifying soil and plant problems and the responsible use of pesticides and fertilizers.
According to Darlene Allen, Master Gardener coordinator for Tech's Virginia Cooperative Extension, applications for the program have been twice as numerous as expected, with more than 120 master gardeners registering from around Virginia and several neighboring states.
"I would say even about a month ago we only had maybe 30 people registered," Allen said. "But then, right at the end people just started calling and registrations just started pouring in at the last minute!"
The master gardeners have received training from various extension offices around Virginia, as well as in South Carolina and neighboring states. In return, they volunteer a minimum of 45 hours of service hours to pay for their training, with an additional 20 hours per year to be considered active members.
To register, call 231-9279, or stop by Cochrane Hall on campus Thursday, 3-6 p.m. The fee is $45.
