SOUTHERN BAPTISTS BLAST CLINTON, GORE

Southern Baptists, unhappy with the homosexuality and abortion stances of their most prominent church members - President Clinton and Vice President Al Gore - submitted 19 resolutions Tuesday criticizing their views.

As the Southern Baptist Convention began Tuesday, the Clinton administration's support of gays in the military and abortion rights took center stage.

"We call upon both the president and the vice president to repent of leading our nation in a direction that is unbiblical, unwise and offensive to God," the Rev. David M. McAlpin, pastor of First Baptist Church of Pine Castle in Orlando, Fla., wrote in his resolution.

Two motions that suggested withdrawing fellowship from Clinton and Gore were ruled out of order, but other resolutions admonishing them could be considered before the convention ends Thursday. The convention can oust churches, but not individual members. - Orlando Sentinel
