THE SCENERY IS A FRINGE BENEFIT

IN THE BUSINESS section of the May 22 Roanoke Times & World-News, staff writer Daniel Howes wrote an article ("Here come some new jobs for the Roanoke region") concerning the New York-based company Transkrit, which is not 25 miles but more than 50 miles from New York City. My husband works for Transkrit, which has been very good to us in many ways.

Howes makes Roanoke sound like the worst place on Earth to live! What's wrong with Roanoke? My family and I visited your city, so that we could see and decide for ourselves if we liked the area. I am most thankful for that opportunity. We found it quite lovely, and the people were among the nicest that I have ever had the pleasure to meet.

He mentioned the reduction in pay in a negative context. Isn't it better to have a reduced paycheck than none at all? Besides, Transkrit has offered employees who are relocating a generous package to help them with the move they face.

Now for this nonsense about "make no mistake, though; they aren't just coming for the scenery." Of course not!

This was a poorly written article. Give more credit to the Roanoke Valley and to Transkrit. I believe that this is a good choice and many will benefit from this decision.

We plan to move to Roanoke and I, for one, look forward to the "scenery." SHARON U. COLOMBO PATTERSON, N.Y.
