The author from hell is . . .

Humorist Lewis Grizzard, as determined by a group of escorts who accompany authors on publicity tours. The criteria: "[An author] wins for being a jerk in a way that's just undefinable," says Kathi Kamen Goldmark, one of the escorts.

Grizzard will "refuse to go to an interview that you set up because he wants to finish watching a playoff game on TV," one source told New York magazine.

Writer Roy Blount Jr. accepted the Golden Dart Board award (aka Author From Hell honor) for the Atlanta columnist, "with apologies on behalf of the state of Georgia."

Past winners: actress Shirley MacLaine, how-to-hostess Martha Stewart, novelist Jeffrey Archer.
