ACADEMIC SETBACK FOR TECH CORNERBACK

Virginia Tech cornerback Danny Dunbar said Thursday it's "about definite" he'll miss the 1993 season for academic reasons.

Dunbar earned 16 credit hours during the 1992-93 academic year, two fewer than the NCAA mandates to remain eligible. His request to make up work in one of two classes apparently was turned down.

"The way it seems, it's like I'll be sitting out the year," Dunbar said from his home in Bradenton, Fla. "It's a major setback because it's going to be two years out of football. But I think I can bounce back."

Dunbar, who was redshirted as a freshman during the 1992 season, said he will remain at Tech. He plans to be in Blacksburg for the second session of summer school.

Dunbar has said Tech coaches asked him to play when the Hokies needed secondary help last season. He was projected as a starter this year at cornerback opposite All-Big East Conference senior Tyronne Drakeford, although defensive coordinator Phil Elmassian had said Dunbar was not guaranteed the starting job.

\ HARDBALL: Tech outfielder J.R. Hawkins has signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers' organization and will begin his minor-league career in either Yakima, Wash., or Great Falls, Mont. . . . Tech recruit Ryan Lambert, a left-handed pitcher from Burtonsville, Md., was offered a free-agent contract by the Texas Rangers. Lambert is not expected to sign, Tech assistant coach Jay Phillips said. . . . Hokies football recruit Willie Wilkins was a 36th-round draft pick by the Seattle Mariners, but he is not expected to sign.

\ CAMPING: Former Tech tailback Vaughn Hebron said he has been invited to the Philadelphia Eagles' training camp in July. Hebron, who signed as a free agent, survived the first series of minicamps. . . . Former Hokies tight end Shawn Grayson was released by Hamilton of the Canadian Football League.

\ BETTER BEHAVE: Tech athletic director Dave Braine and Dan Wooldridge, the Big East Football Conference supervisor of officials, are writing a "code of conduct." It will cover "how we expect coaches [and teams] to behave on the sidelines," said Braine, who returned Wednesday from the Big East's annual meeting.

Syracuse coach Paul Pasqualoni and league commissioner Mike Tranghese also will have input on the rules, aimed at preventing the type of fracas that occurred in last year's Syracuse-West Virginia game.

A brawl erupted in front of the Syracuse bench after WVU defensive back Leroy Axem knocked Orangemen quarterback Marvin Graves out of bounds and Graves angrily threw the ball at Axem.

\ WEDDING BELLS: Tech's all-time leading basketball scorer, Bimbo Coles, will marry Weslea Ann Reeves on Sunday in Lewisburg, W.Va., where both grew up.

Former Hokies linebacker Archie Hopkins is in the wedding party.
