U.S. ATHLETES RECEIVE MORE INCENTIVES

U.S. athletes, already promised a car from the organizers for winning at the World Outdoor Track and Field Championships and cash awards from the U.S. Olympic Committee, will receive additional financial renumerations.

The executive committee of USA Track & Field, the national governing body for the sport, announced Thursday its plans for distribution of incentive funds for the championships at Stuttgart, Germany, in August.

With individual winners assured of a $30,000 Mercedes Benz from the International Amateur Athletic Federation, USAT & F will give $3,000 to silver medalists, $1,500 to bronze medalists, and $500 each to fourth- through eighth-place finishers.

In the relay events, all U.S. gold medalists will receive $1,000. Silver medalists will collect $750, and bronze medalists will get $375. Fourth through eighth in the relays will net each runner $125.

Previously, the USOC said individual gold medalists would get $5,000, with $4,000 for silver medalists, $3,500 for bronze medalists, $3,000 for fourth-place finishers, $2,500 each for fifth and sixth, and $2,000 apiece for seventh and eighth.
