PENTECOSTAL HOLINESS CAMP MEETING STARTS MONDAY

It's time again for the \ APPALACHIAN CONFERENCE CAMP MEETING at the conference headquarters on U.S. 11 just outside of Dublin. The annual Pentecostal Holiness Church gathering gets under way Monday and continues through June 27.

Bishop B.E. Underwood, general superintendent of the Pentecostal Holiness Church, will be the speaker. Underwood formerly was superintendent of the Appalachian Conference, which used to be known as the Virginia Conference.

Services will be held at 7:30 p.m. daily Monday through Saturday and at 6 p.m. June 27.

The schedule includes programs for all ages.

On the revival circuit this week:

Gospel preacher Lewis Mikell will be at the\ LAUREL HILL CHURCH OF CHRIST, Dry Valley Road, Radford, Sunday through Friday. He'll speak at 11 a.m. Sunday and at 7:30 each Mikell evening. For more information, call C.E. Mannon at 763-9825.

Charles Smith of Richmond will conduct revival services Sunday through Wednesday at\ ST. JOHN'S FELLOWSHIP, 710 Church St., behind the Cambria Post Office. Services June 20 will be at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Weekday services will be at 7:30 p.m.

The Victorians will sing at the Sunday evening service.

Christiansburg's\ MAIN STREET BAPTIST CHURCH YOUTH CHOIR will present the musical "The Extra Mile," Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Christiansburg High School auditorium.

Admission is free, and there will be a nursery.

The congregation of\ BLACKSBURG CHRISTIAN CHURCH (Disciples of Christ) will celebrate the church's 90th anniversary starting with the morning service June 27 at 10:45. The Rev. Anna Jarvis Rhea of Winston-Salem, N.C., will speak. Rhea once served the Blacksburg congregation as well as Newport Christian Church.

A reception will follow the service.

The original congregation of eight women, seven men and three children came together in 1903. In the fall of that year, the group paid $800 for the former Baptist church on the corner of Roanoke and Church streets. A new church later was built on the same foundation. It now houses the Blacksburg Jewish Community Center.

The Disciples moved to their present location at Toms Creek Road and Watson Avenue in 1969.

A well-known Pulaski minister, the Rev. Richard E. Bethune, will retire June 30 after a decade of service at First Presbyterian Bethune Church. After a trip, Bethune, 62, and his wife, Virginia, will move to Blacksburg this summer.

A graduate of North Carolina State University and Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Bethune has served churches in several Virginia localities, including Victoria, Danville and Front Royal. He is a former moderator of the Winchester Presbytery.

A retirement reception for the Bethunes will be held June 27, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., in the fellowship hall of First Presbyterian Church, Fourth and Jefferson streets.

The Youth Ministry of\ MERRIMAC PENTECOSTAL HOLINESS CHURCH will hold a car wash today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Deli Mart in Blacksburg, next to Radford Brothers supermarket.

The Belmont Christian Bodybuilders youth group is sponsoring a pancake supper tonight from 5 to 7 at\ BELMONT CHRISTIAN CHURCH fellowship hall, Virginia 114 (Peppers Ferry Road), a mile from the Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles office.

Admission will be by donation. Proceeds will help pay for the youth group's trip to the Southern Christian youth Convention next month.

\ SUMMER SCHEDULES in effect at several area churches:

Grace Episcopal Church, 210 Fourth St., Radford, holds Sunday services at 8 and 10 a.m. through August.

The Presbyterian Church of Radford, Fourth and Randolph streets, has a church school fellowship gathering each Sunday at 9 a.m. Church school follows at 9:15 a.m., and worship is at 10 a.m. through Aug. 29.

First Presbyterian Church, Pulaski, has worship at 10 a.m. Summer hours remain in effect through Aug. 29.

At Blacksburg Presbyterian Church on Church and Eakin streets, morning worship begins at 10, with fellowship and refreshments after the service. A nursery and extended session are available for youngsters up to age 5. Call 552-2504 for more information.

St. Jude Roman Catholic Church, 7318 Peppers Ferry Road, Fairlawn, offers one Mass Sunday at 10 a.m. The church will continue to offer Mass Saturday at 5:15 p.m.

Christiansburg Presbyterian Church, 107 W. Main St., has two morning worship services at 8:45 and 10:55, with Sunday school at 9:45.

First Church of God, 650 Canaan Road, Christiansburg, will offer two morning worship services starting July 4. Services will be at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m., with Sunday school at 9:45 a.m. through Aug. 29. To kick off the new schedule, the Singing Sammons Family will sing during both services and present a concert during the Sunday school hour July 4.

\ SHAWSVILLE CONGREGATIONAL HOLINESS CHURCH, Alleghany Spring Road, has Sunday School at 10 a.m. and worship services at 11. The church also has Sunday and Wednesday evening services at 7.

Faith Christian Church, 1125 Roanoke St., Christiansburg, will have vacation Bible school for all ages Sunday through Thursday evenings from 6:45 until 9, with a closing program for parents and families Friday at 6:45 p.m. This year's theme is built around animals and the part they play in God's plans.

The Presbyterian Church of Radford, Grace Episcopal Church, Christ Lutheran Church and St. Jude Roman Catholic Church are joining forces to sponsor vacation church school sessions using the theme "Living in God's Creation." Classes for preschool through junior high students and for adults start June 27 at 5 p.m. and continue June 28 and 29, 6-8 p.m., and June 30, 6-8:30 p.m. Classes will be held at the Presbyterian Church of Radford, Fourth and Randolph streets.

Classes for ages 3 through sixth grade will run Aug. 16-20 from 9-11:45 a.m.

Church names in the news:

After three years as organist and choir director at Christ Episcopal Church, Pulaski,\ LAVELVA STEVENS will join the staff of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Wytheville, July 1.

Stevens is a former director of music at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Blacksburg.

She was educated at Lenoir-Rhyne and Wittenberg colleges.

\ ANGELA AREHART of Pulaski has been licensed to the gospel ministry at Pulaski Church of the Brethren. She is serving Hiwassee Church of the Brethren as minister of nurture and visitation.

A graduate of Pulaski County High School, Arehart currently is studying at the Christian Growth Institute in Roanoke, a program to prepare Brethren laity for church leadership.

\ MARLENE MCGRATH , campus minister at Virginia Tech's Newman Community for seven years, will move to Richmond where she plans to assist new mothers in "a form of hands-on ministry."

McGrath, a resident of Blacksburg for 17 years, helped start several Innovative programs for the Newman Community, primarily working with the 150 university-associated families that live in town year-round.

\ THE REV. RICK ECKLUND of Floyd Parish United Methodist Charge will be ordained a deacon and probationary member of the Virginia Annual Conference Monday. Ecklund also will be reappointed to serve his fourth year as pastor of the charge, which includes Copper Hill, Havens Chapel, Huffville and Stonewall United Methodist churches.
