OBIT WILKINSON, RAYMOND R. DR.

WILKINSON, Raymond R. Dr., 69, of Roanoke, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, June 15, 1993. His death has left his family and friends shocked with grief. He was pastor of Hill Street Baptist Church in Roanoke for 33 years until his recent retirement. A native of Amelia County, Va., he earned his B.S. degree from Virginia Union University, his degree in theology from the Virginia Union Seminary, and the Doctor of Divinity was bestowed upon him by the Richmond Theological Seminary. A past president of the Minister's Conference of Roanoke and Vicinity, his church hosted the weekly meeting for more than 50 years. He was past president of the Roanoke Chapter of the NAACP and was a pioneer in the Civil Rights Movement of this area. A member of a bi-racial committee, he helped paved the way for integration of schools and restaurants in Roanoke. Those left to survive him are his wife, Barbara Wilkinson; three daughters, Cassandra Wilkinson, Philidelphia, Penn., Nadine W. Benjamin, Bladensburg, Md., and Danita Gail Wilkinson, Baltimore, Md.; two grandchildren; two brothers, William W. Wilkinson, Amelia County, Marion Howard Wilkinson of Richmond; four sisters, Susie Holmes and Cornelius Overton, both of Richmond, Mabel Thornton, Washington, D.C., Fannie Fitzgerald, Woodbridge, Va. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 2 p.m. at the Pilgrim Baptist Church with Dr. Benjamin Robertson, pastor of Cedar Street Baptist Church, Richmond, officiating and burial in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. Friends may call on the family Friday from 7 until 8 p.m. at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel.
