RATTLING THE CITY'S CONSCIENCE

GAINSBORO is a very special place to me because I have so many happy memories of my early childhood. It was my first home.

My occupation requires that I drive throughout many cities in Virginia, and there is not a more attractive residential neighborhood than the one between Hotel Roanoke and St. Andrew's Catholic Church. It should be given historic designation. Have city officials considered using Shenandoah Avenue as the east-west traffic corridor, instead of plowing two four-lane highways through this quiet, small residential area?

Many people and I thank my aunt, Evelyn Bethel, for returning home and rattling the conscience of the city into keeping the last vestige of its oldest neighborhood containing our black heritage and culture. RICARDO C. STOVALL SALEM
