MARTINSVILLE OPENS SEASON TONIGHT

The Martinsville Phillies open their sixth Appalachian League baseball season today when they visit the Burlington Indians at 7 p.m.

Among those on the Phillies' roster this year are five players taken in the top 15 rounds of the recent amateur draft. They include third-round pick Josh Watts, an outfielder from Glendale, Ariz.; and outfielder Jeffrey Key, a fourth-rounder from Covington, Ga.

Another notable Phillies player is outfielder Derek Stingley, whose father, Darryl Stingley, played for the NFL's New England Patriots before a neck injury ended his football career and left him paralyzed.

Martinsville opens its home schedule Wednesday when it faces the Kingsport Mets at Hooker Field.

A year ago, Martinsville went 22-43, finishing 16 1/2 games out of first place in the league's Northern Division. Nevertheless, the Phillies drew 66,695 fans to finish second in the league in attendance.

Martinsville will be managed this year by Ramon Henderson, who succeeds Roly DeArmas. The coaches are Dana Brown and Ray Rippelmeyer.
