Alma Holston, who led Thursday's program, said Friday that pledges still were being counted, and the total raised was not known. But it represents a significant increase over the $2,000 raised last year when the "jail" was set up at the Memorial Square Shopping Center Wal-Mart.
More than $6,000 came through cash and checks, "and we had an awful lot of pledges," Holston said.
Holston was "arrested" in last year's fund-raiser, and had to telephone people to raise "bail" before she could be released.
Those who volunteered for arrest Thursday had to do the same thing, getting either donations or pledges. The wooden jail was set up in a Main Street parking spot with a bank of phones conveniently nearby for jailbirds to make calls to raise bail.
Pizza Hut provided food for volunteers, and Pepsi provided beverages.
"It was just a good day," Holston said. "If you have the cooperation of the people, it goes well . . . and I hope to do it again next year."
