LOCAL SENIOR WINS GOLD IN ARCHERY

Betty Gordon of Christiansburg won a gold medal Friday in archery at the U.S. National Senior Sports Classic in Baton Rouge, La.

Gordon finished first in the 55- to 59-year-old division in the compound fingers competition.

The Senior Sports Classic is a biennial multisport athletic competition for athletes 55 and older. More than 7,200 of the nation's most accomplished senior athletes are competing in 18 sports.

With one-third of the racing season complete at Franklin County Speedway, Rick Sigmon is in position to win his first Late Model track championship.

Entering tonight's NPA/North American Racing 300, Sigmon holds a 20-point advantage over Dudley Lawhorn and is 40 points ahead of former champ Ronnie Newman.

Tonight's card at the Callaway track will include the six usual divisions (Late Model, Street Stock, Pure Stock, Mini Stock, Rookies and Any Car) plus Modifieds and a Powder Puff race for female drivers.

The Modifieds made their 1993 debut two weeks ago and will run every other week for the remainder of the season.

Gates open at noon and qualifying begins at 6 p.m. The first race is 8 p.m. Admission is $5 and children under 10 are admitted free.

Former University of Virginia basketball standouts Heather Burge and Dawn Staley were named Friday to the U.S. team for the Women's World Championship qualifying tournament June 26 through July 4 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Burge, a 6-foot-5 center, was the 1993 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year as a senior. She finished her Cavaliers career with 2,058 points and 955 rebounds.

Staley, a 5-6 guard, completed her UVa career in 1992 as the only player in ACC history to score 2,000 points, grab 700 rebounds, pass for 700 assists and make 400 steals. She was a consensus choice as the nation's top player as a junior and senior. Staley spent the 1992-93 season playing professionally in Segovia, Spain.

Doyle Smith, associate sports information director at Virginia, has been named Howdy Myers Man of the Year by the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.

Smith, who also received the award in 1984, was honored Friday during a luncheon in Timonium, Md.

He has worked with the lacrosse program at UVa since 1969 and has been a full-time member of the school's sports information department since 1972. Smith has served as the USILA's information director since 1973.

Also honored Friday was Bob Sandell, a former UVa lacrosse and soccer coach. Sandell, who has been a lacrosse official since 1959, received the USILA's Joseph "Frenchy" Julian Service Award.

Amherst County High School has hired former Nelson County coach David Camden to take over its boys' basketball program.

Camden retired from coaching at Nelson County two years ago. He beat out Staunton River coach Eddie Carter, who had been considered the front-runner, for the Amherst County job.
