GLAZE LEAVES BUCS DAZED PITCHER LEADS LYNCHBURG WIN

Lynchburg's Gettys Glaze fired his final pitch about 4 hours, 15 minutes after the scheduled start of Friday night's baseball game at Salem Municipal Field.

In the wet and lengthy interim, Glaze faced 31 Buccaneers, recorded 25 outs - eight by strikeout - and endured two rain delays totaling nearly two hours.

His complete effort fell just short of a complete game.

The 22-year-old right-hander, who entered the game with a 1-6 record and a 4.25 ERA, battled and baffled the Bucs for 8 innings as his Red Sox whipped Salem 6-2 in a Carolina League game.

The Citadel graduate walked two and gave up six hits, including two infield hits and a bad-hop single.

Glaze warmed up for the 7 p.m. game, then sat as the rain delayed the start 40 minutes. He set down the first five Bucs in order before a second storm put the game on hold for 70 minutes.

By that time, the Red Sox had given their starter a 4-0 edge. Bill Selby and Randy Brown had first-inning RBI hits, and Bob Juday doubled the lead in the second with his first homer of the season (in 160 at-bats).

"I thought it was going to be rained out, and it was my first lead in about five games," Glaze said. "I told [manager Mark] Meleski, `If we go back, I can pitch.' I thought I could go a few more innings and get a win. You don't want to give up when you have a lead.

"The break did kind of bother me. I had to get rubbed down again. I had better stuff before the rain, but I just tried to come out and throw first-pitch strikes."

Lynchburg added unearned runs in the fourth and fifth innings - each after an error by shortstop Tony Womack - and led 6-1 after 4 1/2.

Womack doubled to start the bottom of the fourth, moved to third on a bad-hop single by Marcus Ponder and scored Salem's first run when Lynchburg catcher Jeff Martin misfired on Ponder's steal attempt.

Glaze faced the minimum nine batters from the fifth through seven innings, and he pitched out of a two-out, two-on jam in the eighth.

"I was going to take him out in the eighth," Meleski said. "He had thrown about 115 pitches. But he said he felt good, and I'm glad he went as far as he did."

In the bottom of the ninth, Ponder led off with a long homer to center field and, after an out, Marty Neff beat out an infield single. Meleski made his second trip to the mound in two innings, and Glaze's evening was over.

"I told Meleski [in the eighth] to give me a chance to finish it. He kept me in and I appreciate it," Glaze said. "But that guy [Ponder] hit the ball about 500 feet."

Todd Miller came in and got Trace Ragland to ground into a double play to end the game.

Salem starter Dave Doorneweerd was the victim of Lynchburg's four early runs, and he did not return after the long delay. The Bucs' bullpen trio of Doug Harrah, Sean Evans and Mark Mesewicz combined to allow no earned runs in the final seven innings.
