BALILES ELECTED NEW PBS CHAIRMAN

Gerald Baliles, Virginia's governor from 1986 to 1990, was elected Friday as the new chairman of the Public Broadcasting Service.

Baliles, a board member since 1992, replaces University of Utah Vice President Ted R. Capener, who had been chairman since 1989.

The board meets twice a year to provide fiscal and management advice to the 346 public television stations. Board members are not paid and they do not advise on program content. - Associated Press
