MOTORIST WINS LAWSUIT IN ARREST FOR SPEEDING

The District of Columbia must pay $201,000 to a Portsmouth, Va., woman who sued the city after she was jailed for repeatedly asking a police officer why he had stopped her for speeding.

The American Civil Liberties Union filed the damage suit on behalf of Shirley Langevine.

A federal court jury agreed that the arrest violated Langevine's constitutional rights.

Her lawyer, James Duda, said district officials have long known that thousands of people are jailed each year for failing to pay deference to police officers. - Associated Press
