Drive officials wanted a more realistic goal this year, given the state of the economy and continued worry about fallout from the financial practices of former national United Way President William Aramony, who resigned under fire last year.
Thirty-one organizations would get funds under the 1994 budget approved last week by the Wythe United Fund board, if the drive meets its goal.
Three organizations usually included on that list - the Wythe County Rescue Squad, Wytheville Fire Department and Ivanhoe Civic League - did not complete the necessary paperwork for United Way benefits in 1994, despite repeated letters from the board seeking it. All three have been invited to apply in 1995.
When the larger goal was not met in 1993, United Way President Mike Hall said, funds for all organizations benefiting this year were dropped back to their 1992 levels.
The budget also includes money for emergency needs, used last year after damage from Hurricane Hugo and when the Family Resource Center shelter for abused women and children was lost to fire.
