District Chief P.A. Taylor of the Roanoke City Fire Department said the fire started at the 17th Street home about 7:30 p.m. in a box fan in the living room.
The family was not at home, located in the 1300 block, Taylor said.
The fire caused extensive damage to the home and its contents, Taylor said.
"The house is not fit for human habitat," he said.
The fire also melted the drop line of a nearby utility pole. It did not affect power to neighboring houses, Taylor said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. - Staff report
