CONFEDERATE FLAG BARRED FROM EXHIBIT

Confederate flags were removed from a courthouse exhibit on Virginia history after a judge said they were offensive.

The three banners were part of a display in the law library of the new Stafford County Judicial Center.

Circuit Judge James W. Haley Jr. ordered the flags removed before the building's grand opening Saturday. Haley acted after a complaint from General District Judge John W. Scott Jr.

"I advised him that they were there and offensive for a large segment of the population," said Scott, the county's only black judge. "They were not a symbol for equal justice for all."

The collection represented all the flags flown over Stafford since the 17th century.

The Confederate symbols were removed Thursday, two days before the formal unveiling of the $5.2 million courthouse complex.
