2 DIE IN CRASH

Two Montgomery County residents were killed Sunday night in a traffic accident near Elliston.

State police said the accident happened about 7:45 p.m. when a van ran off Virginia 603 near Interstate 81, hit a guardrail and then swerved back into the road, hitting a car, police said.

The driver of the van,29-year-old Daniel W. Crook of Christiansburg, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Also killed was a passenger in the second vehicle, 82-year-old Ruth Welcher Long of Elliston.

At least one other person was taken from the crash scene to a hospital by helicopter.

Police said Crook was not wearing a seat belt; Long was.
