ROANOKE GOLFER LEADS QUALIFIERS

Michael Smith, playing on his home course at Roanoke Country Club, led the sectional qualifiers Monday for the AMF-Signet Open of Virginia and the Virginia State Amateur.

Smith's two-round total of 139 put him three strokes in front of David Havens in qualifying for both tournaments.

Bill Sibbick (144) and Willis Johnson (146) led the way in the Open sectional qualifier at Martinsville's Chatmoss Country Club.

Johnson's 146 total also qualified him for the 80th Virginia State Amateur, which is scheduled for June 30-July 4 at James River Country Club in Newport News.

Tom McKnight of Galax received an Open qualifying exemption as the low amateur in last year's tournament. This year's event will be played July 15-18 at Willow Oaks Country Club in Richmond. Qualifiers
