He and his wife, Trudy, retired to Smith Mountain Lake in 1985.
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Faber developed an interest in photography while a student at the University of Alabama. He was a stringer for many newspapers and magazines and, as a sophomore, won first prize in a Collegiate Digest photo contest.
Faber joined the Army Air Corps in 1941 and produced training films that helped U.S. pilots improve aerial reconnaissance photography.
After World War II, he became photography director at the Birmingham (Ala.) News. He stayed there until 1950, when he went to work for the Eastman Kodak Co. While with Kodak, Faber lectured on news photography at universities and gave presentations across the country.
He compiled photographs for five books on subjects including industrial, travel and news photography. His 1960 book, "Great News Photos and the Stories Behind Them," was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1979.
Faber won numerous honors, including the Joseph A. Sprague Memorial Award, the highest award granted by the National Press Photographers Association.
He traveled to northern India in 1963, where he interviewed and photographed the Dalai Lama, the exiled leader of Tibet who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his nonviolent struggle to regain his country's independence from China.
Faber decided to retire to Smith Mountain Lake after traveling in the area while working for Kodak. He bought a house on the lake and took up striped-bass fishing and boating.
Faber helped found the National Press Photographers Association and the Virginia News Photographers Association. He was historian for the national group from 1956 until his death.
Survivors include his wife, Trudy Faber; seven children, John Faber, Tuscaloosa, Ala., Karin Faber Clothier, Daleville, Marlene Faber Pang, Santa Clara, Calif., Donald Faber, Saudi Arabia, Dana Faber Kelly, Baltimore, Dorian Faber Gilman, Bedminster, N.J., Erich Faber, Roanoke; and seven grandchildren.
