OLD NEIGHBORHOODS PLAN REUNION

Former residents of old Northeast Roanoke - neighborhoods destroyed from the 1950s to the 1970s to build the Roanoke Civic Center and other commercial properties - will hold a reunion here July 2-4.

Festivities begin with a dinner-dance at 8 p.m. July 2 at the Sheraton Inn. A picnic is planned from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 3 in lower Washington Park. Memorial services for deceased residents will be held at 8 a.m. and at 10:45 a.m. July 4 at Pilgrim Baptist Church, 1415 8th Street, N.W.

A similar reunion two years ago drew hundreds of former residents. The areas destroyed by the city's urban renewal program covered about 50 blocks, including hundreds of homes, churches, businesses and schools.
