\ PHYLLIS CROOKE, manager of the Blacksburg For the Birds store, presented a slide show on attracting and identifying birds at the June meeting of the Southside Garden Club. Blue ribbons in horticulture were given to MRS. R.H. BAKER, MRS. THOMAS CACECI, MRS. HENDRICKS, MRS. DANIEL LUDWIG, MRS. JOHN MUENCH and MRS. GERALD ROBINSON.
Artist PEGGY ANN TURNER of Blacksburg received an award from the Arts Council of the Blue Ridge for her "Women's Repair Kit" at the 14th Annual Roanoke City Art Show. The piece will be on display with other winning entries until July 11 at the Art Museum of Western Virginia's first-floor gallery at Center in the Square in Roanoke.
\ CONNIE KRIZ is the new executive director of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the New River Valley. Kriz has lived in Blacksburg for more than 12 years and holds a master's degree in family resources from West Virginia University.
The Blacksburg Host Lions Club has named JAMES A. FAISZT the recipient of Lions International's Melvin Jones Award. The honor was achieved by the Blacksburg club's $1,000 contribution to International Sight First Campaign and honors an outstanding member of the local club.
A horse named Bullet, shown by JASON SLAUGHTER of Willis, won the special high points trophy at the Floyd County Volunteer Fire Department Station No. 2's 14th annual horse show. Other first-place winners included DEBBIE SLAUGHTER and her horse Black Knight's Spirit, of Willis; TOMMY MOLES and Star, also of Willis; ANNE SNIDER and Streaking Imp, of Dublin; CHRIS THOMPSON and Wimpy, of Dublin; and EARL MOLES and Black Dark Haze, of Willis.
Town and Country Garden Club of Blacksburg held its monthly meeting for May at the home of MRS. B.C. HORNE, who won a blue ribbon for an assigned arrangement. MRS. AURELIA LACY and MRS. FAURAO received red ribbons.
\ MRS. VIERS won five blue ribbons for horticulture specimens, along with MRS. FAURAO who won one blue, one red and one yellow ribbon. MRS. HALE won four blue and two red ribbons and MRS. HORNE won one red ribbon.
Two art works by Ironto artist L. BOSTIC SMITH were chosen for display at the juried show of The New England Fine Art Institute's National Invitational Exhibition of American Contemporary Art. "Hearst and Sublime Pedagogy," charcoal on paper, and "Emmett Kelly with Weary Willie," charcoal and pastel on paper, were displayed at the Northeast Trade Center in Woburn, Mass., in late May.
Hot-air balloon pilots FRED BROWN of Wytheville and DEE DANNER of Christiansburg participated in the second annual Dawn Patrol Rally in Statesville, N.C., in the spring. The event requires pilots to rig the balloons in predawn hours, launch and fly before official sunrise, then land after official sunset.
Blacksburg native MARCY H. SCHNITZER has been named executive director of the Voluntary Action Center of Montgomery County. Schnitzer holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Virginia Tech.
Several Montgomery County youths participated in 4-H competition held at Auburn High School recently. The top area award, the purple ribbon, was won by 17 local competitors: CURTIS SINK, KELLY MCKINNON, WENDY DEANER, MARY WOOD, LORI MCKINNON, TAMMY STILES, LANE HOLLANDSWORTH, ERIN WILCKE, CLAY ROGERS, BRENDON DONOHOE, AMANDA HUFF, JACK DONOHOE, SARAH JOHNSON, SIDNEY HOLLANDSWORTH, CATHERINE OTTINGER, JULENE HYATT and ANDREA KIRK.
Blue ribbon winners in 4-H were NATHAN JANEY, ASHLEY DODSON, FREEMAN NESTER, SHANNON MARX, JESSIE NESTER and LISA SINK. Red ribbons were received by BRAD DONALDSON, TRAVIS DONALDSON, ALICIA RANCK, T.J. WILLIAMS, GREG WILCKE, JENNIFER LINK, AMY RANCK, REBECCA ORANGE and ANDY HEDRICK.
\ CINDY HARRISON of Blacksburg has been named Toastmaster of the Year by the Blacksburg Toastmasters Club. She was given a plaque in recognition of her educational accomplishments, club service, dedication and enthusiasm.
Several New River Valley artists are participating in the Arts Council of the Blue Ridge's 14th annual Roanoke art show, which opens May 21. The artists are STEVE BICKLEY, MARTHA DILLARD, J. \ JOHN G. PALMER was given the AARP Community Service Award by members of the American Association of Retired Persons, chapter 2613 in Blacksburg.

\ RONALD R. GRAHAM, 1992-93 president of the Christiansburg Jaycees, was elected regional director of the Dixie region of Virginia, covering all the Jaycee chapters in Montgomery, Floyd, Patrick, Henry and Franklin counties.

\ ROBERT REYNOLDS of Blacksburg has been elected president of the Montgomery County Kiwanis Club for 1993-94. ROBERT STALLARD is first vice president, SANDY SMITH second vice president and CARL BURKE treasurer.
Elected to the Kiwanis Club board of directors were BRIAN MOORE, SUE BENTLEY and KENNETH RYSTROM. TOM MURPHY and HUGH SPRINGER were elected delegates to the Kiwanis international convention being held in Nice, France, in late June.
\ GREG TILLEY, head men's basketball trainer at Liberty University in Lynchburg, received a recognition award at the annual basketball banquet. Tilley is a graduate of Liberty University and Blacksburg High School. He is the son of George and Arleta Tilley and plans to attend medical school in the fall.
\ ROBERT K. REYNOLDS of Blacksburg has been elected to a two-year term as first vice president of the Virginia Federation of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
\ JAMES M. MOORE of Blacksburg is chairman of the bylaws committee of the New River Valley chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
\ EUNICE HARRIS was crowned jamboree queen at Riverview Nursing Home's recent charity jamboree, which raised more than $1,700 for the Sunshine Fund of Southwest Virginia Cancer Center.
\ MRS. HERBERT CORK accepted four awards on behalf of the Arboretum Garden Club at the Blue Ridge District of the Federation of Garden Clubs. One award was given to MRS. ROBERT PRITTIE for a page in the club's scrapbook, and MRS. J.G. PALMER received a state life membership pin.

Former Christiansburg resident DEWEY LUSK has led the Emory & Henry College baseball team to its best season since 1977. Lusk attributes the turnaround to aggressive recruitment and hard work.
