NEW RIVER PEOPLE IN BUSINESS

The 21ST CENTURY LEADERSHIP PROGRAM, offered as a Virginia Tech public service initiative, helps leaders to analyze their individual strengths, establish personal development objectives, and work toward solutions to societal and economic challenges facing the region.

The one-year program features numerous speakers and a self-assessment process to measure leadership strengths. Twenty-one local residents recently completed the program and were recognized at a ceremony in Narrows recently.

These community leaders included Blacksburg and Christiansburg residents RAY ALCORN, BARBARA BOARD, CAROL CHAFIN, KARIN CLARK, BOB CRIMINGER, LISA MOOSE, PETER KARP, BOB SMITH and ROBERT STUART. DAN FARRIS, director of Montgomery County Social Services, and WILLIAM MERKT, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Radford Community Hospital, also completed the program along with RONALD CHAFFIN of Dublin, PAM AKERS of Pulaski, CLIDIA LEWIS of New River, PATRICIA AKERS of Narrows, DEBBIE LINEWEAVER of Hiwassee, MICHAEL CHRISLEY of Dublin and ROBERT LYONS of Pulaski.

The New River Valley chapter of Professional Secretaries International has elected and installed new officers for the 1993-94 year. PATTI HALL of Christiansburg is president; TRINA PAULEY of Floyd, president-elect; SANDY PHILLIPS of Radford, treasurer; LINDA SHEPPARD of Radford, recording secretary; and IRENE DOWDY of Christiansburg, corresponding secretary.

\ MICHAEL A. CAVELL has Cavell joined the staff at Draper Aden Associates. A graduate of the University of North Carolina and Virginia Tech, Cavell will provide the environmental team with process engineering design and will oversee programs for solid-waste projects.

\ W. DAVID CONN, Virginia Tech faculty member, has been named Executive of the Year by Professional Secretaries International. BRENDA J. HUSSER, administrative assistant at Virginia Tech, was chosen Outstanding Member of the Year for 1992-93.

\ KAREN A. STOEVENER has been promoted to mortgage loan officer at The National Bank of Blacksburg. She is a Blacksburg High School graduate and attended Virginia Tech and Mary Baldwin College.

\ RICHARD REPASS of Century 21 Home Town Realty in Pulaski and STUART COVEY and BETTY WOODFIN of Century 21 Old Virginia Ltd. of Dublin have been named Listing Superstars for the first quarter of 1993 by Century 21 Real Estate of the Mid-Atlantic States, Inc.

\ GEORGE A. WILLIAMS has been named to Legg Mason's President's Council for outstanding client service. Williams has been with the Radford office for 12 years and is a graduate of Virginia Tech.

\ KEN MOORE has joined Townside Inc. Realtors as a sales agent. Moore grew up in the New River Valley and is a graduate of Blacksburg High School and the College of William and Mary.

\ JAMES HUNT, purchasing agent for Hoechst Celanese in Narrows, has received the Reuse-Reduce Award from Aratex Services in Roanoke for being environmentally conscious and choosing recycling over direct disposal when the opportunity exists.

New officers for the New River Valley Workshop are DALE CLARK of Christiansburg, president; PAUL STEELE of Radford, vice president; and LYNN DAVIS of Radford, secretary treasurer. Other board members are LINDSAY WEST and JOHN DICKEY of Blacksburg, HIAWATHA NICELY of Pulaski, JIMMY TURK of Radford, LES PUGH of Floyd and BARBARA STAFFORD of Giles County.

\ RICHARD P. BEST will become the new vice president and general manager at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant on July 1. Best has been operations manager since coming to the Radford facility in 1989.
