But Allen, who won the GOP nomination early this month, appears to have made a bigger purchase than did Democrat Mary Sue Terry, although neither campaign will release how much time it is buying.
Allen has purchased air time, mostly during morning and evening news hours, on commercial stations in all major media markets, said campaign spokesman Jay Timmons. The ads will run for at least a week, he said. Terry, by contrast, confined her initial purchase to the Cable News Network.
In his commercials, Allen is pictured at his Northern Albemarle County log home, dining with his family, working and walking with his children.
"It's time we had a governor who put taxpayers first," the announcer says. The two ads mention Allen's late father, professional football coach George Allen, along with Allen's career at the University of Virginia, his decade in the House of Delegates and one year in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Terry's commercials have been airing on CNN since June 7, stressing general issues such as crime control and government spending. The ads urge viewers to send for her campaign issues booklet.
