The new lane and other changes should speed up traffic through the traffic light at the intersection by about a third, said Dan Brugh, Montgomery County's resident engineer with the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Brugh estimated the work will cost roughly $100,000 when all the bills are in. The work is being done by the highway department and local contract labor.
Besides building the new lane, the department will convert one of two left-turn lanes on 460 on the Blacksburg-side of the intersection into a new eastbound through-lane.
The addition of the new through-lane will permit simultaneous left-turn traffic from 460 onto 114 in both directions. That will eliminate one cycle of the traffic light, speeding up traffic.
Another change will be a new optional left-turn lane added to the existing left-turn lane coming out of Market Place on 114 toward downtown Christiansburg.
The construction of the new third lane on U.S. 460 will eliminate one of the cross-overs on the highway in the area of New River Nissan.
