LOCAL COMPANY TO SPONSOR RACE

Advance Auto Parts, an automotive company headquartered in Roanoke, announced Tuesday it will sponsor a NASCAR doubleheader October 17 at Martinsville Speedway.

The Advance Auto Parts 500 will include a 300-lap NASCAR Busch Grand National race and a 200-lap Late Model stock car race.

The event will begin at 1 p.m. with the GN race to be televised live by the Nashville Network (TNN cable).

Al Holland of Roanoke is one of 12 former athletes who will be inducted into the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Hall of Fame on Aug. 21.

Holland starred in both baseball and football at North Carolina A&T and went on to a successful career as a relief pitcher in the major leagues.

Roanoke Post 3 West beat Patrick County 7-4 in American Legion baseball at Municipal Field in Salem on Tuesday. Kelley Dampeer had two hits, including a solo home run, and Lance Treibel struck out six batters in five innings and got the victory. Post 3 West (2-0) beat Patrick County (0-7) 24-6 on Monday night as Dampeer and Joey Hutton combined for eight hits and seven RBI.
