BONIFAY HOMER LIFTS BUCS OVER BULLS 4-2

Salem first baseman Ken Bonifay hit a three-run homer in the first inning and the Buccaneers cruised to a 4-2 Carolina League victory over Durham on Tuesday.

Bulls' starter Jerry Koller got Tony Womack and Marcus Ponder to fly out to start the game but Chance Sanford doubled and Jon Farrell walked to set up Bonifay's blast over the right-field fence.

Salem scored again in the fourth off Koller (5-4). Designated hitter Tony Ragland singled, followed by Marcus Hanel's double to put runners on second and third. Kevin Polcovich then singled to score Ragland.

Eight Buccaneers had hits, led by Bonifay who was 2-for-4.

Esteban Loaiza was the winning pitcher. He gave up two runs on eight hits while striking out four in 6 innings. Jeff McCurry pitched the ninth to earn a save.

In the sixth inning, Durham's Lance Marks drove in Dominic Therrien on a groundout. The Bulls scored again in the seventh when Mike Warner doubled in Doug Wollenburg who had reached base on a single and stole second.

Gary Wilson will pitch for Salem tonight when the Bucs (2-0) take on the Bulls (0-2) again in Durham.
