On this trip, I happened to see Mayor Jim Taliaferro. We exchanged greetings and passed the time talking about nothing important. It struck me what a really nice guy he is. It must be awfully difficult for someone like him to be in politics. He gives so much of himself. He tries so hard to make things as nice as possible for those who live here in Salem. I'm sure Mayor Taliaferro knows he can't please all of the people all of the time. My guess is he's probably wondering why those that are displeased scream so loudly and so publicly about such trivial things. He must wonder where are those people who are satisfied.
I count myself among those of the silent majority. The silent majority being that overwhelming number of satisfied people who are very pleased with the way things are - and feel no burning need to testify. A rough guess is that the silent population in Salem is about 99 percent of our citizens. RUSTY WALKER SALEM
