LET VIRGINIA LEAD THE WAY

I HAVE been reading the paper with astonishment! All of the accidents, some tragic, taking place because of individuals driving under the influence and/or with suspended licenses.

What does it take to protect not only our children, who are not in a position to pass tougher laws, but all of us?

The young man who crashed into the house in Salem has no idea of his good fortune. He survived and so did the two 12-year-old girls. An intoxicated driver speeding down the road out of control. Our laws should become so incredibly tough that people would be fearful of breaking them. Prison should be a horrible place, and not a country club. Sentences should not be suspended.

A banner now goes across the Burlington Elementary School, which states "SADD." Students Against Drunk Drivers. The young man involved in another accident was not as fortunate. He did not survive. As a mother, my heart goes out to his parents and family. What a loss. What an unnecessary loss. His life cannot be brought back. I want to think we will learn from our lackadaisical laws and work toward preserving future lives.

Come on, Sens. Robb, Warner, and Gov. Wilder. Let's be the first state to impose stricter laws for drinking and driving and license suspension. Our children's lives depend on it. DONNA H. ABBOTT ROANOKE
