HIV MAY ALSO ATTACK IMMUNE-CELL PRODUCTION

The AIDS virus may not only destroy certain immune-system cells. It also may hamper the body's attempts to produce them, research on mice suggested.

Infected mice showed rapid loss of cells that were maturing into T cells, a key component of the immune system, said the researchers from SyStemix Inc. of Palo Alto, Calif., and elsewhere.

Other researchers said the work confirms conclusions of previous studies.
