TECH APPOINTS NEW HUMAN RESOURCES DEAN

Peggy Meszaros, an administrator at the University of Kentucky, has been named the new dean of the College of Human Resources at Virginia Tech.

The college is Tech's fourth largest, with 1,207 undergraduate and 241 graduate students.

Meszaros, 55, is dean of the College of Human Environmental Sciences and professor of family studies at Kentucky. She starts at Tech Aug. 1 at a yearly salary of $110,000.

She will succeed S.J. Ritchey as dean of the Tech college. Ritchey, who is a full professor and has been at Tech for over 30 years, will return to full-time teaching in his field of human nutrition and foods.

The fact that the Tech College of Human Resources is one of the top three in the nation was the primary reason she decided to accept the job at Tech, Meszaros said. She looks forward to being with the college at a time when it's ready to make an impact on the state and nation.

Tech's ownership of the Hotel Roanoke was mentioned to her when she interviewed for the job and she's eager to see the hotel, Meszaros said. The hotel, restaurant and institutional management department will fall under her supervision at Tech.

Meszaros, whose maiden name is Sisk, is a native of Hopkinsville in western Kentucky and has family roots in Virginia's Shenandoah County.

The new dean received her doctorate in child and family studies and higher education from the University of Maryland in 1977. She has been at Kentucky since 1985.

At Kentucky she also served as the assistant director of the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station, assistant director of the Cooperative Extension Service, acting chair of the nutrition and food science department and acting chair of the family studies department.

Meszaros has conducted research in the areas of public/family policy formation, quality-of-life indicators, career values and competency-based outcomes. She will become president-elect of the American Home Economics Association at the end of June.

The College of Human Resources at Tech has five academic departments: clothing and textiles; family and child development; housing, interior design and resource management; hotel, restaurant and institutional management; and human nutrition and foods.

"The university is fortunate to attract an administrator and scholar of Dr. Meszaros' credentials," Tech Provost E. Fred Carlisle said, mentioning her extension and administrative background. "We are delighted to attract her to Blacksburg."
