FIRE-LANE PARKING FINE RAISED

Beginning July 1, you could get a $50 ticket for parking in a fire lane in Roanoke.

City Council has increased the fine. "Our goal is to have people think twice before parking in fire lanes," said Deputy Fire Marshal David Rickman.

"This fine is not designed to produce more money for the city. Rather, we hope that the number of violations will be significantly reduced and the level of fire safety will be increased."

Fire lanes are designated by signs and street markings. They are required by the state fire code and are designed in order to give emergency vehicles access to properties such as shopping malls and large buildings.

ddition, fire lanes are designed to prevent cars from parking in front or blocking access to fire hydrants and other Fire Department water connections.

Fire-lane citations are issued both by city fire marshals and police officers.
