FORMER SUPERVISOR NAMED TO BOTETOURT SCHOOL BOARD

Former Botetourt supervisors Chairman Harold E. Wilhelm has returned to county government with an appointment to the School Board.

Wilhelm will represent the Valley District. He will replace School Board Chairman Bob Patterson, who could not continue in the seat because redistricting had left him out of the district.

The Valley District's supervisor, William G. Loope, nominated Wilhelm at the Board of Supervisors meeting Monday. The supervisors voted 5-0 for the appointment.

Other candidates for the School Board seat were Anne Wagner, a Dominion Bank employee; Ken Venable, a retired FBI agent; and Michael Beahm, a farmer.

The Board of Supervisors also voted 4-1 to reappoint Jim Ruhland to his seat representing the Blue Ridge district. Ruhland, who was nominated by Supervisor Wendy Wingo, was challenged by the Rev. Donald Eade of Colonial Baptist Church.

In putting Wilhelm up for the Valley seat, Loope noted that Wilhelm has been involved in the school system as a student, teacher, principal and county supervisor.

Wilhelm worked in the school system from 1950 until he retired in 1988, save for two years when he worked as a vice president at Gala Industries. Wilhelm was a teacher for nearly 10 years before moving on to be principal at Buchanan Elementary and later Botetourt Vocational School.

He was a county supervisor for 12 years and filed to run for re-election in 1991, but withdrew from the race, citing family health concerns.
