STROLL THROUGH SPACE AT ONE OF THE FAIR'S NEWEST EXHIBITIONS

While you're at the Salem Fair, you can take a walk in space.

The U.S. Space Camp Expo, a NASA-affiliated education program featuring demonstrations and exhibits of space gadgetry, is one of the newest features of the Salem Fair this year.

Taking up more than 5,000 square feet for its exhibits and viewing areas, U.S. Space Camp Expo will feature video footage from the U.S. Space Camp and NASA Space Missions, demonstrations of training equipment and space hardware, and a life-size inflatable "space walker."

Demonstrations will include the Multi-Axis Trainer, which is designed to simulate a space craft spinning out of control and was used during the Mercury program; the 5 Degrees of Freedom Simulator used in the Gemini program as a space walk simulator; and the Space Station Mobility Trainer which simulates conditions for movement aboard a space station.

The Space Shuttle Middeck Living Quarters demonstration will allow participants from the audience to experience the cramped quarters the astronauts endure. There will also be a Jet Cockpit Trainer which visitors to the Expo can climb in and "fly."

In addition to the demonstrations, there will be a variety of displays and large models of the Space Shuttle, the Lunar Excursion Module, the Apollo Command Module, and the Hubble Telescope.

The actual U.S. Space Camp offers educational programs which use the excitement of the space program to encourage young people to select and achieve in math and science courses. In addition to Aviation Challenge and U.S. Space Academy, Space Camp offers two special programs for 4-H members in partnership with the "4-H Missions in Space" program. The specifically designed curricula for the 4-H include Space Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Since 1982, more than 150,000 students from all 50 states and dozens of foreign countries have graduated from U.S. Space Camp, U.S. Space Academy and Aviation Challenge programs. All visitors to the U.S. Space Camp Expo are invited to register for a chance to attend the U.S. Space Camp. The drawing will be held at the close of the Expo July 11.

The U.S. Space Camp Expo, sponsored by Nabisco, will be located in the Civic Center Arena and will be open Friday through Monday, noon-11 p.m., and Tuesday through Thursday, 4-11 p.m.
